Apple has filed for a patent that would allow its digital music player to detect when it was being dropped and take the precautions necessary to minimize the damage of the impact when the digital music player hits the concrete.
A section of patent application from Apple reads: "The portable-computing device protects its disk drive by monitoring for such accelerations and operating to avoid usage of the disk drive during periods of acceleration. Through such protection, the likelihood of damage to the disk drive or loss of data stored on the disk drive is able to be substantially reduced."
Apple applied for this patent in June of 2003 making us wonder if it is currently in use or will be in future versions of the iPods.
