SonyÕs true MP3 support

Sony is just now releasing a digital music player that natively supports the MP3 file format.

After announcing in September that it would support the MP3 format as well as its proprietary format ATRAC 3 the new hard drive based Network Walkman is now launching. Previous versions of the Network Walkman series required conversion from MP3 to ATRAC 3 when the files were copied to the player. This new model has native support and wraps each file in an OpenMG DRM layer to keep the files from being copied back to a PC.

The NW-HD3 is the third model of the series that started in May with the launch of the NW-HD1. The new model is available in a variety of colors including silver, black, blue and red.

No word on when it will ship but it is expected to hit Europe and the US by Christmas time.
